Rohit Sharma Does Not Accept Mankading: If India’s Condition Worsens In The Match
Controversial Mankading Rule Shakes Up Cricket
At first it may have seemed mild when the International Cricket Council introduced new rules into cricket on October 1, 2022. From that day forward, their new set of regulations took effect, such as controversial “mankading” rule which gave bowlers new power in their bid to dismiss batsmen out.
Mankading became an official sanctioned method of wicket taking on 1 October 2022; before that it could only be done without official ICC license. Now however, Shami used this strategy successfully against Sri Lanka when using Mankading against Dasun Shanaka on 98, in Guwahati ODI due to new ICC rules that allowed her to do so.
Rohit Sharma Provides Answer to A Decision and Questions by Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, made headlines when he asked Shanaka to bat again after being dismissed via mankading. Although Shanaka’s century had no measurable effect on the result of the match, many questions arose: Was Rohit correct in recalling Shanaka after dismissal via mankading; will any bowlers from men’s team adopt such techniques in future; was Shami insulted by Rohit’s actions; would Rohit have made the same decision had Ashwin used such techniques instead?
Rohit Sharma Reacted
Rohit commented later, saying “he only intended for Shami to run him out by using mankading”. By making such statements it appears Rohit isn’t too fond of mankading rules but they exist to remove batsmen, with Shami’s action completely compliant with them.
Clarifying ICC Rules
ICC rules apply equally to batsmen and bowlers alike, yet neither Shami nor Shanaka were aware of a new rule, which underscores its significance for their game. Just like bowlers do, batsmen must abide by all ICC regulations just like bowlers do.
The Sportmanship Debate
Rohit Sharma was widely commended for his sportsmanship while Shami’s actions were met with opposition. One key question remains as to whether Rohit would have made the same decision if victory wasn’t within India’s grasp; even when made for team success. A decision which simply adheres to rules may impact players negatively and reduce motivation levels even when done for team victory.
