Country music legend Alan Jackson was hospitalized in 2022 following a severe stroke. A 64-year-old singer suffering from Charcot-Marie-Tooth degenerative neurological disease was taken to a nearby hospital when he felt dizzy and unsteady on his feet.
What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth?
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) is an inherited condition affecting nerves that connect the brain to all parts of the body. CMT damages nerves that extend from arms and legs, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, pain, difficulty walking or balancing and difficulty balancing on uneven ground. CMT cannot be cured; however, treatment can help manage its symptoms and enhance quality of life.
How did Alan Jackson disclose his illness?
Alan Jackson revealed his CMT diagnosis during an interview with TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager in September 2021. He stated he inherited it from his father and it had been impacting him since several years prior, including difficulty performing on stage and feeling very uncomfortable during performances.
“I know I’m having some difficulty walking on stage and balancing properly, even in front of the microphone,” he admitted.
He added that he did not plan to retire from music anytime soon and that he aimed to do as much as possible within his reach.
“I never wanted to do the big retirement tour like other musicians do, then take time off, like others do and come back,” he stated. “That statement may seem unconvincing; however, that does not indicate my lack of touring; rather I will try my hardest to keep touring as often as possible.
