On Mother’s Day in Boston, Mohamed Fofana went missing while playing near Castle Island’s coastline with his sister near Castle Island’s shore. Mohamed’s grandfather reported him missing, prompting a massive search effort that included state and local police forces as well as marine units, dive teams, air wings, dive teams and dive units to search the island for Mohamed; ultimately his lifeless body was found on Spectacle Island across from Castle Island; at only four years old, Mohamed suffered from sickle cell anemia as well as autism.

Mantenjay Fofana was shocked to know her young son Mohamed was missing while visiting their grandfather in Suffolk County. Massachusetts State Police offered their deepest sympathies and will conduct the follow-up death investigation, with Mohamed’s remains being sent for burial by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.

Marine units and dive teams from various law enforcement and public safety agencies conducted an intensive search along Western Way – the area connecting Dorchester Bay with Dorchester Main Channel in Boston – for hours on end. They used side-scan sonar to provide a sonar image of the ocean floor while investigating any anomalies it detected, conducting an exhaustive search along Castle Island seawall out to 150 yards offshore as well as reviewing camera footage to trace Mohamed’s potential route away from playground area.
