Also known by his full name of Choudhary Aitzaz Ahsan, Aitzaz Ahsan is an esteemed lawyer and politician from Pakistan. He served twice as leader of the House of Pakistan’s Senate of Pakistan from 1995-1997 and again from 2012-15 respectively; additionally he became Leader of Opposition from Punjab between 1994-2018 as well. Ahsan became part of its Senate from Punjab from 1994 and held this position until 2018. Aitzaz Ahsan became well known for leading his lawyer’s campaign in order to reinstate former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry; in 2008 Asian Human Rights Defender Award by Asian Human Rights Commission was presented in recognition.
Why was Aitzaz Ahsan arrested?
Aitzaz Ahsan was arrested following Pakistan’s state of emergency in 2007 and placed under house arrest until March 2008. At that point he was eventually freed. Aitzaz Ahsan has long been recognized for his advocacy of human rights, so his arrest became an emotive topic of conversation.
